Let’s talk about mood boards. Back when we first started looking at the basics of creating a character we talked about having a founding idea, wither that was a niche of RP you wanted to explore, a character trait or quality you found interesting or perhaps inspiration from another source like books and movies. Whatever it was it gave you the first building blocks for your character and there is nothing wrong with that. As Steve King advises ‘to improve as a writer one of the best things to do is read’. It inspires, and helps us derive from it our own concepts. Mood boards can be very useful for collating your ideas before you even create your character but also for several things post-creation.

Loaded Lore: The Horde Part One

This is going to be a look or summary into each faction, with the hopes of helping anyone considering starting WoW or trying out RP within the game and trying to decide which one they want to side with or, if they have already chosen which side they want to be on learning more about where they came from and why they are how they are. I hope to give a slightly better idea of the atmosphere and story-line to each side as it currently stands. That said: I have not played any of the original Warcraft RTS’s. They are lingering on my To Do list as ever, and I came to WoW just a little ways into the TBC expansion, so I am in no way an expert. This will not be a complete and conclusive look into the full history of each faction, but more a concise and relevant accounting for players trying to get the idea and feel of the Horde, along with the generic lay of the land in terms of history and major events.

FTGU: Writing Character Descriptions

Now that you know what your character looks like, and you have an idea in mind for their flaws and virtues and who that makes them as a person. We are going to talk about your character descriptions. These are used in several add-on’s that 98% of all roleplayers will have to make RP that bit smoother and easier. They allow you to write a description of your character that folks can see within the game.

It is not mandatory; that is, you can indeed role-play without any kind of description, or you can have this description on a profile outside the game if you like. Most role-play realms have a wiki or an external hub for their RP community; on Argent Dawn we have the Archives at www.argentarchives.org. That said I would strongly advise against it: having one of these add-on’s is like having your curtains open in the Red Light District. Without it, people will assume you’re a raider and move along.

FTGU: Character Appearance

We have discussed who your character is in terms of themes, atmosphere, strengths and weaknesses, we have a fair idea of who they are as people and the circles the move in and the kinds of RP we’re seeking with them. The next step, at least in the order I have hurried these topics into, is to realise their appearance as this can build to, add to, and sometimes even alter or change the information we already have. Remember characters are not static and permanent, even after you roll them and RP them their appearance might change over time, but we will delve into that later on. In this section we are purely going to explore deciding on a look for your character, there will be a follow up post about writing a description based on that for RP add-ons such a FlagRSP, MRP and TotalRP.
