Teldrassil like many other zones is often overlooked. I often find that those of us who have been playing this game for so many years now are almost blind to the content and the world around us. So by means of re-familiarizing roleplayers with the world around them, we bring you this series of posts. We will also include a bit of lore and atmosphere with each location, along with images and any other little bits of information we can find for you. You can find the rest of the posts in this series here: Exploring the World of Warcraft Series Index.

Teldrassil Lore
Teldrassil holds a lot of history for such a small island. After the devastation of the Cataclysm, the Night Elves were faced with many problems. The one often foremost in the minds was their lost immortality. Malfurion Stormrage was missing and the mantle of druidic leadership fell to Fandral Staghelm. So seeking a way to regain their eternal life, he hatched a plan.
With the co-operation of the Circle of the Ancients and many powerful druids, the immense tree that now sits in the Veiled Sea was grown. However, it did not receive the blessing of Nozdormu, the Dragon Aspect of time, and so it was horrifically flawed. Teldrassil (“Crown of the Earth”) did not grant the elves their immortality.
However, it was still a place of enchantment and safety for the Night Elves. They made their homes in the huge boughs and founded Darnassus, the city. For many, many years they lived here in harmony with nature.
It was not to last. Unknown to Staghelm and the others, a great evil that Malfurion Stormrage had once sealed away had attached itself to the new World Tree. This caused the tree madness and a corruption that spread. The conflict of the Emerald Nightmare spilled out into the waking world.
After his return, Archdruid Stormrage was able to cleanse the evil from Teldrassil. The tree was restored, and the Dragon Aspect Alexstrazsa, impressed that despite the hardships and the lack of a dragon’s magic, the tree had prospered, gave her power as a belated blessing. This made the tree prosper … but still, couldn’t give the Night Elves their immortality.
Atmosphere in Teldrassil
The sounds of nature are all around. The rustle of the wind in the trees comes with the melodic song of birds. Furthermore bright, vivid colour surrounds any traveller here. The grass is lush and green, the trees tall and a mix of verdant jade and majestic purple. The air is thick with the scent of life, of wet earth and growing things, of chlorophyll, of blossoming flowers.
It’s all too easy to forget that the landscape is nestled in the boughs of one near-unfathomably large tree due to hills rising above the viewpoints, rocks, and dirt sit amongst the plants and paths. Night Elf Sentinels in their sturdy armour patrol the travel routes, their mounts moving with liquid, feline grace.
There are still darker areas, of course, because there is still corruption here, although it isn’t as strong as it was. Dark, shadowed caves and deep Barrow Dens, the lingering taint of the Nightmare as sour as spoiled milk.
Culture in Teldrassil
The tree is home to Darnassus, the capital city of the Night Elves. Other, smaller settlements are found here as well such as Aldrassil and Dolanaar which offer guidance to young and inexperienced elves, and Rut’theran village provides boat travel to other Alliance towns and cities.
The tree is also home to furbolgs, who were driven mad by the corruption of Ursal the Mauler’s use of fel moss and travellers can also come across satyrs, seeking to further spread the Nightmare’s taint.
