Family Familiar is an achievement in World of Warcraft wont for Pet Battles. It is actually a Meta-Achievement, meaning that to get it you first need to complete ten smaller achievements. All in all the 11 achievements are worth 60 achievement points.
This achievement can be a long and arduous task to complete that few have the patience for. To help you get it done I have rounded up a few resources and made a handy little checklist to keep track of progress. Remember to follow us on Twitter for more posts, tips and tricks.
What is Family Familiar
As I noted above Family Familiar is an achievement in World of Warcraft that centers around pet battles. the reward is a mini-pet called the Nightmare Treant that you can find here! To complete this meta-achievement you first have to complete ten smaller achievements, one for each pet family. Each sub-achievement requires you to defeat 12 Legion Trainers with a team full on only one particular family of pets. Such as the Roboteer Achievement requires you to defeat 12 trainers with only mechanical pets in your team and so one for all the other families as well.
At 120 fights this is a huge undertaking for pet battles and collectors. It can be very confusing and difficult at times to find the best teams to manage these fights. While also keeping track of what you have done. Therefore when trainers you need appear, you will know.
To that end I have complied my two favorite resources for getting this one and added in a free checklist to track your progress if you join our weekly newsletter Here!
Useful Resources
Xu-Fu’s Pet Guides
I’m in love with this Xu-Fu’s Guides. If you are doing Family Familiar, or even if you do pet battle dailies regularly, you need this one in your bookmarks. He has a whole section dedicated to this achievement along that you can find Here. You can find a whole list of the pets required to do the fights in this achievement. He is also working on developing a Pet Checker in addition, which will check your account for those pets. He already has another checker for general Legion WQ pet battles that you can check out too.
On the Family Familiar section you’ll see the icons for each family and a list of the trainers that apply to the achievement. To use this you need to check what trainers are up that day on your world map then find them in the list. Once you have that trainer selected, pick a family you haven’t used to defeat them. Check if you have those pets to make up your team.
For most of the fights there is more than one options for a team which you can find in the numbered tabs on the right side of the frame shown below. And it is always a good idea to check the comments if you are missing a certain pet. Very often people will comment with a good substitute.
Once you have your team made up you can follow the instructions for the fight and you’re ready to tick that one off your list. I would strongly suggest getting any 110 alts you have in on this as well. As your main will only be able to do the fight once, for example with a Humanoid team. If you log over to an alt however, you can do the same fight with a Mechanical team and you will have both done.
You can do this for as many alts as you have at level cap or until your patience runs out.
WarcraftPets
WarcraftPets is an incredibly useful website for pet collecting. It has a ton of features I might do a video if there is interest in that. If you find you are lacking required pets from the guides above, this is the place to go. You can search for any pet by family type and any other criteria. You can even search for certain abilities and find a similar pet that might have it.
Each page details how, where and any other conditions that need to be met to collect each pet, like some can only be caught at night. This is a great place to help you collect up the missing pets you need or find potential replacements. You can also log in and upload your collection to access some of their other features like server ranking.
Freebie Family Familiar Checklist
There is some RNG involved in this achievement, a lot of the time it depends on which trainers available. Each pet family achievement requires you to beat 12 trainers so that is 120 fights to track and manage. To save you flicking through 10 different achievements every day one of these trainers pops up trying to remember which trainers you defeated and with which families; I made you a little freebie if you’re willing to sign up for our weekly newsletter below.
How to use the Checklist
Once you sign up you’ll get an email linking you to the Google Sheets Checklist. Before you do anything you need to click on ”File” at the top left corner and ”Make a Copy”. This will allow you to make edits to your copy of the sheet. As shown here.
Once you have your copy you can click the drop-down box for each Trainer-Family and add a mark. You can print this out if you prefer having a hard copy. You can fill all the boxes with empty check-marks and print it, to check them off as you go. Or you can fill out the 12 fights for each family that you want to do. The blue boxes I have coloured in are some of the harder fights according to Xu-Fu’s guides so those might be the ones you might want to steer away from if you can. Check mark the fights you plan to do or the ones you want to avoid. How you use it is entirely up to you.
